I'm just teasing you. But ours is the solar holiday; we actually are celebrating the movements of the sun.

This link seems somewhat related to the current discussion: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22047858/They probably did really just forget it, but I bet they wouldn't have shown up for work on the 25th.

Mickey Rooney just did a spiel on 60 Minutes where he talks about the 70 or so christmas catalogs he recieved unsolicited in his mailbox this year. One of the things he found was that the word "christmas" was used exactly zero times in all of the catalogs. He also pointed out (among other things) that a two-page spread featuring dozens of images of a mazda car was not a car ad but instead an ad for widescreen televisions. Pretty interesting if you ask me.

Did he look through the catalogues at all the item descriptions for "Christmas" or did he just not find it on the front?

Ha ha. Andy, Mickey, whats the difference. Andy Kaufman used to sing about Mickey Mouse. No, that was Mighty Mouse. The cartoon super mouse, not the rocket. ;D

duh, I meant andy. I don't know why I referred to him as Mickey. Seems like it rolls of the tongue pretty well, doesn't it? my bad.
He claimed to have read through all of the catalogs without seeing the word "christmas" printed a single time. These were catalogs that were obviously holiday-themed (there was a shot of all of them sitting on his desk that made it quite clear). I believe what he says. Many big companies are afraid of using the word "christmas" in their advertisements.

Many big companies are afraid of using the word "christmas" in their advertisements. They need to chill out then. This must be an American thing. Here, in the most secularised society in the free world, nobody has a problem with the word 'christmas'. It's just what it's called.

Again - I don't think anyone has ever been threatened against using "Christmas" in advertisements. It is quite the opposite - Christian conservatives and other opportunists bash companies for not using "Christmas" in their ads, as if it is required. If there are people out there insisting that businesses or people not use "Christmas," I am not aware of it.
"The War on Christmas" is a phrase coined by Fox News in stories that bash people who use more generic terms.

I think both things are happening at the same time. Some companies avoid using the term christmas out of fear of being un-PC, and then they are bullied and ridiculed for it by the conservative right who thinks there is a "war on christmas."
I don't think there is a "war on christmas" more than any other rational person does. I just think America is too politically correct.

I think there are a very vocal minority of people who object to the public expression of religion in general, and Christmas therefore falls under their condemnation.

I'm not saying this doesn't happen - but I haven't seen it. What I have seen is Bill O'Reilly and Fox News going on about the "war on Christmas," but no stories of anything except businesses and people using generic greetings. I don't recall any stories of anyone being bullied not to use the word "Christmas."
