For those of you that have access to Hulu on your computer. They now have "For all mankind." I watched it over the weekend. I'm sure many of you have already seen it, but for those that haven't it offers an interesting perspective on the Apollo missions. www.imdb.com/title/tt0097372/

For All Mankind is also available as an instant watch on Netflix. The streaming is convenient (and cheap), but the better video picture makes the DVD worth purchasing. In fact I might even have to spring for the blu-ray.

A stunning movie, but it's a pity that the same or a similarly-edited clip of Neil Armstrong jumping down to the footpad then saying, "That's one small step for a man..." (I've always heard the weak "a") gets used by documentary-makers to portray the "first step," which its not.
I have typed out everything on the DVD -- the soundtrack, commentary and a list of scenes, and anyone is welcome to a copy. PM me if so.

Armstrong admits he may have let the "a" out. He has said that in listening to tapes of his transmissions as a test pilot, it was a common enough occurrence. It was also common to swallow his "a's" as well. I've always heard the hint of an "a" in the rhythm of the words and thought it was covered by being partly swallowed and the static. But then I am an Armstrong fanboy.

For All Mankind also received some criticism for mixing the footage from various Apollo spaceflights (and Gemini too, if I remember correctly) together to depict a generic mission to the moon. Artistic license, I guess, but things like that are the reason why HBs think someone filmed the Apollo 11 LM lifting off from the moon. I enjoyed the movie though. It's been a while since I watched it, so maybe I'll do that today.

It used Gemini EVA footage mixed in with the Apollo 9 EVA. It is quite obvious when you are looking at the Gemini hatch but I suppose there is a lack of footage for the Apollo earth orbit EVA.

Artistic license, I guess... I never had any problem with the mixing of the images and sounds because I knew it was that way from the start. It is a work of art -- beautiful, impressive art -- done in documentary fashion, not a literal, factual, reliable documentary. I've watched it many times and played the soundtrack and the commentary, yet I still sit there breathless at the end, and that's when played on only a 14-inch TV set. One of the best things about the film is that they took the trouble to fix the jerkiness of Ed White's spacewalk, which was apparently the result of a fault in the 16mm camera. From the typescript of an interview with Al Reinert: Edited to add in first paragraph, "It is a work of art -- beautiful, impressive art -- done in documentary fashion, not a literal, factual, reliable documentary."

The fact that the images of one mission are often used with the sound track of another makes for some added entertainment in my opinion. Can you name the mission the sound for each clip came from and, for some extra points, the reason why you know it can't be from the footage you are currently watching? ;-)
