Doesn't sound like a big thing? It has never snowed in my home town in recorded history, until today! Having lived in places where it does snow it seemed really strange watching it fall from the sky here. I can't say that it never snows here now, just that it's sort of rare. It didn't settle though so still have that in our favour.

I was putting that into my perspective. You are 9 degrees further from the equator than Houston, where it snows every 10 years or so, on average. So what is it that keeps snow from falling in your region? Is it part of the great NZ desert or something? Right now we are in a record heat wave and drought. So if you have any spare cold wet stuff lying about....

Two main things. 1) The ocean. Being next to the sea, literally right next to it, that keeps things a little bit warmer during the winters. Our usual winter nighttime low is between 3-5 degrees C dropping to -1 - 0 degrees C a few time a year. We just set a new record last month when it dropped to -2.6 C overnight. 2) The big rock. We have a massive big rock due south of us that has a very serious effect on our weather, in this case it tends to shield us from southerly attacks because the air has to rise to get over it, so generally dumps any snow it has there before it hits us. It only snowed here for about 15-20mins and never settled. It has been fine since then, though another front is coming through tonight. Much of the rest of the country is under snow though. It even snowed in Auckland, the first time since 1939!
