Here is a YouTube video you might actually want to watch. Coming this fall to Discovery, a new series that debunks all the junk about the Universe! Phil Plait is an astronomer on a mission to challenge the myths of the universe with scientific proof.

Phil Plait, the third myth buster? Particularly the part where he says he needs a really big explosion.
I hope the show is a hit. I'll do my part by putting it on my DVR schedule.

If the rating system were designed to count that--last I knew, it wasn't--that would indeed help!

If the rating system were designed to count that--last I knew, it wasn't--that would indeed help! According to Wikipedia, Neilson collects data on time-shifted viewings, but networks ignore those because advertisers will assume their paid commercial announcements are being skipped over by the viewer.

Having just turned 50, I am out of the demographic set that the advertisers are looking for anyway. And yes, I also DVR shows just to zap commercials. Most shows are one third advertising and the breaks are so long the shows need to recap what was said in the prior segment. So if there is something I want to watch, I'll start the recording and go do something constructive like unload the dishwasher rather than be so annoyed by the ads that I don't enjoy the show.
Anyway, I hope the BA has a successful show, even if he can't count on me to watch it the way Discover wants me to.

I was watching TV the other night and saw Phil Plait on an episode of Known Universe on National Geographic. I immediately turned to my friend and said "I KNOW THAT GUY", which isn't even true. It's great to see an astronomer I've heard and read a lot from getting a TV show on national TV. Now, if Discovery would just bring out the show in the Netherlands in the not too faraway future...

I'll be looking for that show in the fall.
I highly recommend Phil's books - they are very entertaining.

I was really thinking of going to TAM this year, and wish I had now. Maybe next... but yes, I like Phil. He seems to have a good sense of humour, and anyone who makes the effort to promote science and make it accessible is a top bloke in my book. With the death of physics and chemistry departments in the UK, we need more like Phil.

I'll be looking for that show in the fall. Hopefully the Canadian Discovery Channel airs it. They don't always show the same programs as the US network, and when they do it's not always broadcast at the same time.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for it, just out of the good of my heart for you Canadians to use my data point to figure out when it's on. Or if.

I highly recommend Phil's books - they are very entertaining. I have his book "Bad Astronomy." I like it but I wish he would have spent more time on the Moon Hoax Theory. He mentions that a book devoted entirely to the Moon Hoax would be a waste of time as the general public would have little interest in it. I don't agree.

Take it up with Phil. Frankly, I'm fascinated by the other material as well.

I have his other book too - "Death from the Skies" - its all about the different ways our universe can end. Very uplifting read.
