Thanks sts60 About 3 minutes after my last post I remembered that the LM came in 2 parts - it was the top part that popped off. I feel a bit of a dunce now

... firstly if the probes cut off the engine ... The probe did not directly cut off the engine. The probes tiggered an indicator light in the cabin to tell the astronauts contact had been made. It was still up to the pilot to shut off the engine. ... looking at the evidence and making an informed decision is the best way to go That's very good advice. Too bad not everyone follows it.

Good point - because it would have introduced the possibility of failure if the probe had failed and cut the engine off while they were higher up, or if they were coming in faster than expected etc

As requested by sts60, I have moved reference to the faked Apollo footage. Here are the some urls for you. There is commentary to the videos, but I don't know who supplied it.A right dunce, apparently. The LM does not have the "equivalent weight of a UPS truck on Earth." And they do not "stall out" in a vacuum. Maybe it's ad hominem, but who pronounces "hover" as "hoo-ver"? Somebody reading from a script, who is obviously more used to seeing 'Hoover' i.e. vacuum cleaner, than the word 'hover'? It's only a supposition but it is also possible that the same person has regurgitated this from a book or other written work produced by someone else, then applied it as a voice over to a freely available piece of video. Something learnt from a degree in History is the ability to evaluate evidence and sources. A primary source is considered to be infinitely more valuable than a secondary source. This is at best a secondary source. Secondly, who made the statements, at what time, and why? I cannot answer the first 2 but the last one seems to be universal amongst all conspiracists (not HB's just conspiracists) is that they do it to make money by selling books and videos. Conversely why do the guys on this forum debunk them? As far as I am aware they do not get paid or receive any physical reward for doing so. A person making a comment of their own free will is considered to be a better source of evidence than someone commenting either for reward (like a spin doctor - and who would trust them?!) or while under duress (which is why torture doesn't work)

"Cheer up!" they said, "It could be worse!" So I did, and it was.

I find it gratifying that so many members of this board are not from the USA. The moderator, I believe, is in Canada. The UK and New Zealand are well represented, along with Australia, Germany and Brazil. Those are the ones that I know of.

That's something the HB's don't seem to understand, or they think that the shadowy US Government is so powerful that it can corrupt us even though we live in a totally different country on the other side of the planet. What I always find so amusing is the claim that things are done by "The Gvernment." I always have to ask which one.

"It's amazing how good governments are, given their track record in almost every other field, at hushing up things like alien encounters......" - Terry Pratchett. Mind you, he also said "The truth may be out there, but lies are inside your head" which must surely be the motto of everyone who believes in the Apollo missions
