Someone was pulling my leg - the world didn't end yesterday after all. Are you sure? We could all be in some transparent/illusionary state right now. Or maybe it's put off till next year, or millennium ...

I was a bit premature. My eyes were just closed . I don't know where you live but it's raining every day here. Broke records and everything... I'm in Windsor. The grass is all dry and crackly. Gee, you're almost next door. It's weird how the weather can be so different. Who's controlling that?

Just ended here too. My, it's dark. Hey, how is it that the world has ended in your region of Ontario when all that's happened in mine is that it's cloudy? (The weather forecasters are predicting a thunderstorm, but lately they've been predicting that every day and it rarely even rains). I was a bit premature. My eyes were just closed . I don't know where you live but it's raining every day here. Broke records and everything...

The world just ended here. Depending on your time zone, you may have a few hours, yet -- or you may already be dead. Sorry to bring the bad news. Just ended here too. My, it's dark.

I hate when that happens. Doesn't happen much anymore though, because I can 'preview' most cd's on Amazon and get a good idea of what it sounds like.
Remember 'Moontan' by Golden Earring? The rest of the album wasn't nearly as good as 'Radar Love' was it?

Now the people I've been talking to seem to think it was only Apollo 11 that was faked. Why all the arbitrary focus on 11? Blurry black-and-white video? Neil Armstrong allegedly being reclusive? Or is it just that people have heard more about 11 because it was the first landing? Perhaps this is explained by the briefest debate I ever had with a hoax-believer: HB: I reckon the moonlanding was faked. Kiwi: Which moonlanding? HB: The moonlanding! Kiwi: Which one? Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, or 17? HB: Ummm... I didn't know there were that many. For real? That is so funny.

Don't you think that "What is the sound of one hand clapping" is a riot? It always puts me in stitches. ;D I forgot about that one...ha ha ha. If a man is alone in the forest, and says something: Is he still wrong?

Then it is okay for me to download all the albums I bought in the seventies and eighties? Great!o I guess, enjoyment is not always tied to the best sound but has a component of the familiar as well. Still, I don't miss the pops and surface noise associated with LPs nor do I miss turning them over and using the Diskwasher every 20 minutes. Particularly for a 4 LP opera. What I don't miss is the money I spent on needles and cartridges. It was a lot if you converted them to todays dollars. Lets see: 1978 bought a $200 turntable (about $600 today) 1980 paid $100 for needle and cartridge (about $250 today) 1982 paid $ 100 for needle and cartridge (about $225 today) and on and on... I was rough on my records and turntable, given my age at the time so they didn't last that long before getting scratched. I remember having to increase the weight of the arm more and more over time to get over the bigger scratches.

I watched a good portion of the opening ceremonies. Were all the fireworks CGI, or just the footprints? EDIT: Watching the video that story links too, I can see that the footprints were CGI but the other displays look more convincing - probably real, I would guess. What disturbed me most in the opening ceremonies were the mindless happy smiles pasted on the faces of all the performers - like "if I frown on camera they will kill me" style smiles. I think they just 'enchanced' digitally the fireworks being broadcast. No doubt most of it was real, or else why would the crowd be cheering for an empty sky? Surely, people in China must smile more than we would suspect. Throughout their history, they have tolerated many brutal regimes yet manage to have a sense of humour. Although, I don't remember Confuscius or Lao Tze writing any good jokes.

I really miss Sam the Man record stores. They had so many records there, especially the one in downtown Toronto - it had two floors. We are basically left with HMV (exspensive) and Sunrise (I believe) plus of course the Walmarts which don't have a great selection. Oh, Future Shop and Best Buy also sell CD's. What I miss though is the record store environment. Its just different today, perhaps because half the store is DVD's and toys instead of records. Actually there is one good record store in town - Encore Records, which started out strictly used but now sell both used and new. I can find material there that I can't get anywhere else.

Good point. The copyright is an inheritance of sorts. I think even Mozart 's offspring should be getting residuals.

The problem is that record companies have been making the majority of the profits since the invention of the grammophone. That's why a group can sell a million CD's but still come out in the red at year's end. That why they have to tour so often, and when their career is finished they still don't have much money and have to get jobs at Q107.
The thing I miss the most about LP's is the extravagant packaging on some albums. I loved reading every square inch of the front and back, inside the double gate sleeve and if you were lucky, you got cutouts with your Sgt. Pepper album or a giant poster with your Beatles White Album.
Wasn't taping your friends album basically the same thing as downloading? Ever make a mixed tape for your friends? I don't remember an uproar over that, but my memory is foggy. Lately, I've been transferring a lot of my albums over the my 30GB mp3 player - it's very convenient to hook it up to the stereo and listen to. I've been lazy playing CD's and yesterday I fixed that. For the last two years I was using a five disc DVD player to play them, and I found it increasingly frustrating. It took so long to load them, and I couldn't find out what was in each disc slot easily. Last night I hooked up my older five disc tray CD player to my home theatre system, and set it up and about three feet off the floor, instead of the twelve inches my DVD player was set at. The CD player loads and changes CD's much quicker - especially useful if I'm playing five CDs in random order. I couldn't do that with the DVD player.
Is it my ears? In another thread I might have made some comments about the sound quality of LP's vs. CD's. On the weekend at my friends house we were listening to both, and I have to admit the CD's sounded better. More dynamic range.

I didn't have a CD player until about '95, so that's not saying much. You paid less for it than I did then. I bought one in 1989 or 1990 I believe - $650. And two years earlier I paid $800 for a VCR!

Someone on another forum who had adamantly said that the Moon landings were faked (because of a waving flag, no less) said in their next message, "I don't watch moon stuff so I can't speak for the other side." Well, too much information will block neurons... I've also heard stuff like, "I hate country (or jazz/classical/disco) music. But I haven't really listened to it."
