I feel that, if the USSR had landed on the Moon, there's a chance that Apollo would have continued, possibly culminating in a lunar base. Had the USSR beat the US, it almost certainly would have triggered a Mars race, but otherwise I agree the space race would have continued.

Most people don't know that LK even existed, so they win some points right there. For me, the LK, alongside seeing Apollo hardware on the big screen, is a major reason just to see that film

No, unless you have a 3.5 mile diameter telescope.A very interesting article that I've used to silence a particularly irritating co-worker. I'm sure most of the regulars round here have read it, but it might be helpful in this forum's fight against the HBs. www.rocketroberts.com/astro/flag_on_moon.htm

Mike Collins makes a similar comment in "Carrying the Fire" and then goes on to explain what caused it. Did he? What page? I read it a while ago so I must have forgotten that he mentioned. From Chapter 13 of Carrying The Fire by Michael Collins: "It was interference between the LM's and Command Module's VHF radios. We heard it yesterday when we turned our VHF radios on after separating the two vehicles, and Neil said that it 'sounds like wind whipping around the trees.' It stopped as soon as the LM got on the ground, and started up again just a short time ago. A strange noise in a strange place." Page 420 (in my edition of the book, anyway).

I think I heard about that mission back in the early 1980s. Isn't that the one that was attacked by General Zod? ;D They were very unlucky astronauts indeed, what with being attacked by an unknown alien force AND Terrence Stamp.

At one point the astronauts joke about hearing weird music on their radios. Mike Collins makes a similar comment in "Carrying the Fire" and then goes on to explain what caused it. I've seen at least one Youtube video debunking MC's explanation and talking about the "music of space" etc etc

I'm not really into sci-fi, but at least it projects the authenticity of the lunar missions. It makes the LM interior look enormous.

On further reflection, the best way to handle it is to keep this on a collegial level. Since you have to work with the guy, do everything you can to ignore that aspect of him. If you get into a long running argument with him it will spill into your work relationship. At that point others in your office will know and all they will see that you two are feuding over what is essentially trivial personal issues. There is no sense in damaging your position at work or getting into a situation where you dislike going to work because of some crackpot. In short, don't give him any room to bring you down. Politely ask him not to bring up the subject again and not to send you personal emails. Do not engage in any discussion over why you are making the request, just as politely as possible reiterate your desire to only have work related contact. Ultimately setting limits on the relationship is the only way to get his respect. Take notes of what you have said. If he does not respect your wishes and if his behavior in any way interferes with your life at work, take it to your employers human resources office.

Have you pointed him here or to Clavius? Yes I have, but have heard nothing from him.

Call a spade a spade. Tell him he is stupid. He is, but basic politeness prevents me from doing that.

During lunch at work yesterday, I got talking to a guy who'd just started work and after a while the conversation moved onto the NASA shuttle launch (there had been something about it on the news this morning), and then the guy mentioned casually "It was all faked you know. The moon landings." I didn't argue the point and we carried on chatting, and when lunch finished off we went. Later on I received an email from him, which I reproduce for your pleasure: - kubrick released 2001:a space odysey - nasa need to make a show out of the moon landing to draw public attention and funding, so they change suit/ship designs to be similar to kubricks - kubrick shoots the moon landing in the same set a year later, after meetings with nasa - nasa mysteriously let kubrick use a million dollar camera on his next film, shot entirely in candlelight, there is only 1 of this camera in the world.. - in The Shining, the boys jumper has apollo 11 written on it, and the symbol of two children holding hands = the nasa gemini project - theres proof the president agreed to shoot the fake moon landing, "just in case" the shuttle didnt make it, after billions of dollars and the countries international image and morale on the line, they just couldnt afford to NOT show the footage -russia WAS waaaayyy ahead of USA in terms of space travel, usa needed to pull something out the bag to intimidate russia and prove their power, after they got their asses handed to them all over the place by the USSR already.. -photographic experts are said to have laughed at the footage, taking minuites to say, theres no f**king way that is real -the footage was shot over 2hrs.. during that time the temperature on the moon would go from -50degrees, to over 100degrees, that change in temperature would completely destroy the film -the footprints were calculated to be way too deep for the actual calculated weight and gravity -the detail on the suits would mean they had to use a flash to even get CLOSE to that kind of detail, but you can see there is no flash in the helmet reflection -you can also see they are using regular cameras with no protection on them, and theres no f**king way the cameras can shoot in moon-like conditions.. -also the flag blows in the wind
tldr: i assess both sides of the story and come to the conclusion that i think it was faked
Because I didn't have much to do, I wrote a point by point refutation, but after 20 minutes I gave up, and I realised I just couldn't be bothered, despite all of the burning stupid. I found something better to do instead. Today I met that guy again, and he said "I see you couldn't reply to my email. No-one has been able to refute all of those claims." There are some really stupid claims in his email. Has any one come across anything dumber?
