Now I can see what's really going on inside those "vacu-cephalics"!

Very nice! (Side track:) supermeerkat, you used the term "burning stupid". I love that description! Is it typically English? One that I enjoy using for those special occasions is, "You know less than nothing!!"

Interestingly, I suspect that our biological/nervous response to getting a UV-induced sunburn is in fact a very large part of why one's arm feels 'hot' when in the Sun. Any biological whizzes here that can comment on that? I am not a biological whiz and not a dermatologist (I'm an ophthalmologist). If I recall correctly the vasodilation (biological response to UV skin exposure occurs hours later and it does make the skin feel hot however the heat that we feel in the sun is IR warmth.

supermeerkat, I didn't mean if the USSR had landed first; I meant that if they had not quit and continued their lunar program to success, Apollo might have gotten funding to continue.

. . . Wouldn't it have been great if the USSR had managed to land men on the moon too? . . . I feel that, if the USSR had landed on the Moon, there's a chance that Apollo would have continued, possibly culminating in a lunar base.

. . . pretty much identical to the cheap ones you can purchase from a super market (which IIRC from the stories I have seen here pretty much how NASA is supposed to have got the ones that went to the Moon). I recall reading the same. (can't remember where, though )

I seem to recall that running out of PLSS cooling water during a lunar EVA was a huge concern.

I've read about the concept...FASCINATING! and yes, probably one heck of a ride! The reason it was never built was that NASA found out that, if they just faked the landings, there was no need for an escape system!

I also recall the sublimator as causing the shallowing.
