Except that there is zero evidence of anyone ever designing, building, testing, launching, tracking and/or recovering an automated sample return probe. I thought the Soviets did? They did, with Luna 16. I believe GillianRen was referring to US attempts. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luna_16

I don't see anything about him being a hoaxer.

My xmas readingL Mike Collin's biography "Carrying the fire", and "The Man who Ran the Moon", the biography of NASA administrator James Webb.
I try to keep my reading varied so it's not all about space, space flight etc, and have just finished reading Richard Dawkins "The Greatest Show on Earth", and have started "The Unequalled Self, a biography of Samuel Pepys". After which I shall start on the above books.

Thanks for that - the event looks rather interesting. No astronauts announced at the moment, but the event is in May, and more names will be announced, either way it's worth a day of work.

I'm aware that some of the Apollo Astronauts do conventions, talks etc but from what I've seen most of them are in the US. Does anyone know of any upcoming events in the UK where Apollo astronauts will be in attendance?

Whilst perusing photographs of Apollo 12, I came across an incredible picture of Al Bean: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/97/Apollo12Visor.jpgAnd there were two things about it that leapt out, and I'm sure someone round here can explain them: - What's the story behind the watch?
- The pack the camera is mounted on has the legend "MAIN MOM" - what does that mean?
Can anyone help?

I can see the fear - he's only there because NASA made him. All they have to do is drive slowly past his house.....
